Having a car in Turkey is quite expensive. Prices of cars, gasoline, taxes, and insurance never cease to unpleasantly surprise drivers.
Today, we will tell you how much it will cost to buy and maintain a car in Turkey!
Despite this, Turks love cars very much, and in every middle-income family, there is at least one car.
Now let's get into the specifics.
How much does it cost to maintain a car in Turkey?
Here are the expenses you can expect if you can't imagine your life without a steering wheel.
When buying a car in Turkey:
A special consumption tax called ÖTV is the one that increases car prices in Turkey.
The ÖTV tax rate in Turkey at the end of 2021 ranges from 45% to 220% of the car's value, depending on the engine capacity.
Just a month ago, the government reduced the rate of this tax, but even now it is not a small amount.
For example, for a mid-sized car with an engine capacity of up to 1,600 cc, the ÖTV tax rate will be 50% of the car's value.
Value Added Tax (VAT), called KDV in Turkish, is another tax that applies to cars. It is currently set at 18%.
Electric cars are also not exempt from these taxes. For electric cars, the ÖTV tax is calculated based on the engine power in KW and currently ranges from 10% to 60% of the car's value. VAT for electric cars is the same as for regular cars and is 18%.
Taxes for car maintenance in Turkey:
This is the so-called motor vehicle tax, called MTV.
It is calculated based on three factors: engine capacity, car value, and its age.
For example, the MTV tax for the most popular mid-sized cars, aged between 1 to 3 years, with an engine capacity of 1301 to 1600 cc and a value above 99,000 TL, will be 2,197 lira per year or approximately 250 dollars per year at the exchange rate as of September 2021.
It can be paid either at once or in two equal installments per year.
We do not recommend forgetting about timely payment because late payment will incur penalty fees.
Compulsory traffic insurance:
You will also need to pay for compulsory third-party liability insurance, called Zorunlu Trafik Sigortası in Turkish.
Its cost depends on whether your car has been involved in an accident and ranges from 800 to 3,500 Turkish lira. Taking an average of 1,500 lira, the cost of third-party liability insurance is approximately 170 dollars per year.
You can also opt for additional comprehensive insurance (Kasko), which also depends on various factors. The average cost can be around 2,300 lira or 260 dollars per year.
Vehicle Inspection in Turkey:
Vehicle inspections for passenger cars are conducted once every 2 years. The average cost for passenger cars in 2021 is 372.88 TL or approximately 42 dollars.
Gasoline and Diesel Fuel in Turkey:
Fuel in Turkey has long been known for its higher prices. The only consolation is that it is of very good quality, and you don't have to worry about your car's engine.
Currently, 95 octane gasoline costs around 8 lira per liter or approximately 0.90 dollars per liter, and diesel is around 7.5 lira.
Refueling with LPG will cost approximately 5.2 lira or 0.59 dollars.
The cost of fuel may vary slightly across cities in Turkey and different gas station networks.
